Barnabas Monastery
Near Salamis, this monastery is known for the story of St. Barnabas and its rich icon collection.
St. Barnabas, born in Salamis, is said to have returned to Cyprus after studying in Jerusalem and worked with St. Paul in the year 45 to spread Christianity. According to tradition, he was killed because of these activities and his body was hidden before being thrown into the sea.
His students are believed to have buried him in an underground cave west of Salamis and placed a copy of the Gospel of St. Matthew on his chest. The burial place remained unknown for many years before the site later became a monastery, completed in 477.
The complex consists of a church, a courtyard, and rooms once used by priests. Today it is especially valued for its icon collection, much of which dates to the 18th century.
